Leading to get the Best from Teams

What makes a team tick? A leader needs to appreciate and demonstrate the humane connection!

Teams succeed if there's teamwork! Given that all teams have the know-how to do the job they are meant for, their success is determined by Teamwork alone.

Whats's teamwork? Teamwork is about putting the interest of the team ahead of individual interests by the team members. Team members take it upon themselves to make up for any slippages or lacking by any member. They understand one another's capabilities and shortcomings and compensate in a manner to fulfill team's purpose!

Teamwork is when members aren't anxious about who worked more or less or who took the lead or received appreciation. The appreciated member or the team leader on his part fosters team spirit and cohesion by sharing the credits with his team members openly and in public wherever possible.

Teams are able to handle and resolve their conflicts for the sake of their goals. Nothing matters to them more than their commitment to their purpose. So team members tend to understand one another's trials and tribulations and look to find logical resolutions for the conflicts. In the unlikely event of an unresolved conflict, the teams also have the ability to deal with the incompatible member and move on.

Teamwork is also about pride of a team identity. Teams get branded for the 'Character' they demonstrate and establish through their activities or behaviour and achievements. Its this character which binds a team together and attracts others to join such a team.

Team members require unconditional trust between themselves. Irrespective of roles and positions in teams, they must be prepared to cover for another member if need be. They must also respect one another for their contributions to the team's purpose.

Transparency and openness in communication between team members and outside world is the pivot on which teamwork evolves. Without fair and frank communication between all members, none of the requisites for teamwork discussed above can be fulfilled.
